Strahan is a remote fishing village on the often rugged west coast of Tasmania. In fact Strahan is the only major settlement on Tasmania's west coast. On the banks of Macquarie Harbour Strahan's major attractions are the Gordon River Cruises and the West Coast Wilderness Railway.

The Gordon River Cruises operate all year round with the better seats offering a sumptuous meal onboard. There are a few stops along the way, but the highlight surely is Hells Gate, the narrow opening to Macquarie Harbour, where huge amounts of water gush in and out on the tides.

The West Coast Wilderness Railway built by Strahan settlers in the late 1800's was a remarkable engineering feat of its day. The scenic 35km journey between Queenstown and Strahan has 42 bridges with the most spectacular being the quarter mile bridge soaring above the King River gorge.

A short drive north on Strahan are the Henty Dunes, a huge mass of sand dunes ideal for sand boarding or just a leisurely stroll. To the west is Ocean Beach, a huge expanse of beach and ocean with the cleanest of air.
